It was first celebrated on February 28, 1909 in New York City, USA. It was organized by the Socialist Party of America. At the same time, in 1917 women in Russia organized a strike for the right and honor. After this, Women’s Day started being celebrated all over the world. History of International Women’s Day

In 1908, when 15,000 women demanding shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote in New York City.

Clara Zetkin, who gave the idea to observe the day internationally. In 1910, she suggested the idea at an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. In the Conference, 100 women from 17 countries are there, and they agreed on her suggestion.

It is the year of 1990. When a socialist political party organized a program for the first time in the US, the resolution to celebrate Women’s Day was passed. The main objective of this program was to empower women to vote. A year later, it received the status at the Copenhagen Conference of Socialist International in 1910. In 1911, Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland celebrated the first official International Women’s Day on March 19. More than one million people attended rallies focused on suffrage, representation, education, and workers’ rights. Whereas, in 1917, women in Russia went on strike for bread and cloth – and four days into the women’s strike the Tsar was forced to abdicate and the provisional government granted women the right to vote.

Due to this strike, the then government gave women the right to vote as well as to give bread cloth. From that time, Women’s Day began to be celebrated every year. However, there were differences in the dates of celebrating Women’s Day. In the immediate period, Russia used the Julian calendar. Whereas, the Gregorian calendar was in vogue in other countries of the world. After this, on March 8, 1921, International Women’s Day was celebrated all over the world.

In 1975, the United Nations (UN) officially started celebrating the day. The first theme adopted by the UN (in 1996) was “Celebrating the past, Planning for the Future”. This year’s focuses on “An equal world is an enabled world” and asks for people to work together to create a gender equal world.
