When Onam Festival Celebrated

Onam is the major festival of Kerala. According to the Malayalam calendar, this festival is celebrated when there is Thiruvonam Nakshatra in the month of Chingam. Onam will be celebrated on 31 August (Onam) in the year 2020 .

Story of Onam

In Kerala, Onam is celebrated in memory of their beloved king Mahabali. The story of Onam is related to Lord Vishnu and his Vamana avatar. According to folk beliefs and Vamana Purana there used to be a great king in Kerala named Bali. Despite being a demon caste, the king was quite committed to his subjects. Due to the good governance of King Bali, the gods started jealous. Jealous of King Bali, the gods urged Lord Vishnu to help.

Lord Sri Vishnu incarnated Vamana after hearing the prayers of the gods. One day Vamana reached the sacrificial assembly. Mahabali welcomed him and asked him to ask for anything he wanted.

Vamana ji asked the king for three pug of land in charity. Danavir Raja Maha Bali accepted this. But as soon as the Mahabali gave this offering to Shri Vamana, the size of Vamana suddenly increased. Vamana then measured the whole earth with one step and the sky with the second step. Now there was no place left to keep the third step. Then King Bali said that you should put a foot on my head. On hearing this, Vamana God set foot and sent the king to Hades.

Since Raja Bali’s subjects loved him very much, Srivishnu gave a boon to Bali that he would be able to get his subjects once a year. Hence, the day Mahabali comes to Kerala, the same day is celebrated as Onam. People of all religions of Kerala celebrate this festival. Many people also associate this festival with agriculture.
