The Supreme Court has held senior advocate Prashant Bhushan guilty in the contempt case. He tweeted objectionably about CJI.

The Supreme Court has convicted senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan in the contempt case. His sentence will be debated on 20 August. Bhushan is held guilty of contempt for two tweets made about Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and four former Chief Justices. His sentence will now be heard in court on August 20.

The court had on July 22 issued a show cause notice to Prashant Bhushan in this case. The hearing in the case was completed on 5 August. A bench of Justice Arun Mishra, Justice BR Gavai and Justice Krishna Murari held Bhushan guilty in the case.

The court took automatic cognizance of contempt in June on two tweets made by Prashant Bhushan about the Chief Justice. Bhushan tweeted a picture of CJI Bobde sitting on a motorbike being published. He had said that the normal functioning of the Supreme Court to maintain physical distance in the Corona epidemic has been discontinued and that CJIs exist among people without wearing masks. A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra issued a notice to his tweet contempt of court.

Bhushan had said in his affidavit that criticizing the functioning of any one Chief Justice or subsequent Chief Justice does not mean tarnishing the image of the Supreme Court. He said that his tweet about the CJI sitting on a motorcycle reflects his anguish for not having normal functioning in the Supreme Court for more than three months.
