The foundation to make Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi) was laid 126 years ago and that too in Natal. At that time, he had gone to South Africa to fight Seth Abdullah’s case. During that time he felt the pain of Indians. He raised his voice against this and founded the Natal Indian Congress.

It was here that he was inspired to unite people for their fundamental rights. Even after coming to India, he worked on it and played an important role in securing independence for the country.

There are two more great achievements associated with 22 August. The East India Company laid the foundation of Madras i.e. today’s Chennai in 1639 on this day. Also two years ago, Rahi Sarnobat had the distinction of being the first female shooter to do so by winning a gold medal in the 25m pistol shooting at the Asian Games.

The East India Company made Chennai the capital in 1639

Francis Day of the East India Company purchased the land on 22 August 1639 in exchange for five hundred million pagodas from the then rulers. Then it used to be Madrasapatnam, a village of fishermen. He formed an army here.
A year later the company built Fort St. George which is known as the first English settlement in India. Today’s Chennai has developed around this fort. After independence, this fort became the building of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

Rahi Sarnobat created history in 2018

In 2018 Rahi Sarnobat achieved a golden success in 25 meter pistol shooting. In this way she became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in the shooting event of the Asian Games.
15 shooters from India have qualified for next year’s Tokyo Olympics. Rahi is also one of them and a strong contender for the gold medal.

Apart from this, this day in history is also remembered for these events: –

1848: America occupies New Mexico.
1849: Austria launches history’s first air raid on Italy’s city of Venice with driverless balloons.
1922: General Michael Collins is assassinated in West Cork.
1969: 255 people killed in US hurricanes.
2007: The spacecraft, which went on a two-week mission to repair the International Space Station, landed safely at the Kennedy Space Center in Endeavor Florida.
2007: Egyptian archaeologists unearthed human footprints, about 2 million years old, in the region except in the West Desert.
