According to the data released by the Kolkata Police Headquarters, a total of 3,936 people have been arrested in violation of the lockdown from March 24 to April 2, ie at 5 pm on Thursday.
A senior police officer said that these arrests were made by Kolkata Police during blockade checking and patrolling at various places in the metropolis. Among them, on the tenth day of lockdown i.e. between 5 pm on Wednesday evening and 5 pm on Thursday, 980 people have been arrested in violation of prohibitory orders. The lockdown started in Bengal from 5 pm on 23 March. At the same time, Prime Minister Modi announced a nationwide lockdown for 21 days on the night of 24 March. As per the data, Kolkata Police arrested the highest number of 1,003 people on March 24 in violation of lockdown. After this, 871 were arrested on 25 March while 453 people were arrested on 26 March.
For the first two-three days, a large number of arrests took place due to needless roaming around and crowding the markets. However, after this, the arrest came down significantly after the vigilance of the administration and awareness campaign regarding social distancing. 182 people were arrested from Kolkata on 27 March, 47 on 28 March, 185 on 29 March, 132 on 30 March, 35 on 31 March and 48 on 1 April. However, on 2 April, Thursday once again there was a surge in arrest. Between 5 pm and 5 pm on Wednesday, 980 people were arrested from various places in the metropolis.
