Only two doctors at KGMU are reducing PPE and mask consumption by seeing patients.

Lucknow. As the incidence of corona infection increases, the scarcity of material needed to protect medical resources, especially doctors and paramedic staff, is beginning to be questioned. However, instead of getting into this debate, doctors at King George’s Medical University, Lucknow (KGMU) have developed an affordable model in which world resources are being provided to corona sufferers by tactically using available resources. In this model, doctors and support staff are claimed to be completely free from infection.

The next two weeks will be significant in view of the rapid increase in cases of corona infection. If the patient increases then obviously the need for resources will increase. KGMU doctors have devised a special strategy to deal with such a situation. The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kit is important in the treatment of corona positive. A PPE kit costs Rs 1500–2000. Doctors know that more masks and PPE will be required if the patient grows. Although the availability of the kit does not appear to be possible in limited resources. Assuming less emphasis is being placed on KGMU in spending less PPE and masks. Talking only about KGMU, it will require one lakh PPE and one and a half lakh masks if the patient grows. Not only PPE and masks, Fever clinics are also being operated in a different way to protect doctors from infection while seeing patients,

Little misses are heavy

Dr. Himanshu explains that the doctor and paramedical staff may get infected if there is a slight lapse in the treatment of corona infected patients. Therefore, we are moving ahead with vigilance and lower PPE spending. PPE and masks have been supplied two days in advance. A lot is expected to come in the next two days.

Increased concern due to the event of Mark

Dr. Himanshu Nizamuddin is worried after Markaz incident. He said that there is a possibility of sudden increase in the number of patients. In such a situation, the consumption of PPE and mask can increase rapidly if the number of patients will increase rapidly. PPE and masks are being given to all the doctors, medical staff, paramedical staff, sanitation workers associated with the corona ward.

Dr. D Himanshu, in charge of KGMU’s Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), points out that PPE and masks can be used to see the same patient once. So far, many of our PPEs have been used. Now we have decided that only two doctors will go to the patients. The rest of the team will be away. Not only this, we have introduced cabin arrangements at the Fever Clinic at OPD. After covering the registration counter there, the doctor will sit in it and see the patient from inside. If need to be examined, they will come out and put a fiber sheet and examine the patient. The same arrangement is being done in the Trauma Center, IDH Board and Gayani Ward.
