The Signal app has overtaken WhatsApp to top positions in India, Germany, France, Austria, Finland, Hong Kong and Switzerland. In addition, Signal has become the top free application in the Google Play store in Germany and Hungary. At one time, the OTP verification of the Signal app was delayed due to the huge crowd in app downloading. In the past two days, the Signal app has been downloaded by more than 100,000 people across Android and iOS devices, reports the news agency Reuters, citing data from Sensor Tower.

What is different from WhatsApp

The Signal app allows users to send messages, make audio and video calls, share photos, videos and links. The app claims that user data is rarely used on its behalf. It also does not send unsecured backups of users to the cloud and it keeps the encrypted database secure in your phone. Also, the security of the app has been given an option to decide on its own. Signal has also brought the option of group video calling in December 2020.

Signal popularity increased by Elon Musk’s tweet

A twit by Tesla company CEO Alan Mast suddenly boosted the Signal app’s popularity. Musk tweeted that he is using the Signal app. Since then, the download speed of Signal app suddenly increased. He wrote on Twitter that ‘Use signal. Musk’s tweet was also retweeted by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

WhatsApp’s new policy

WhatsApp has brought a new privacy policy for users, which will be required to be accepted by all WhatsApp users. If not, WhatsApp will close your account after 8 February. Actually, WhatsApp’s new privacy policy will give the company the legal right to use user data.
