National Unity Day
National Unity Day is celebrated every year on 31 October. This day was started by India Government from 2014 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel ( Iron Man of India ). Today India is celebrating the 145th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel this year. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played an significant role in India’s independence movement and at the integration of India with 560 princely states. He had been the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of independent India. National Unity Day is celebrated to acknowledge Patel’s attempts to unite the country.
Why is national unity celebrated ?
India is a country of diversities – religions, cultures, languages and traditions. Therefore, it is very important to maintain the unity of the country. This day aims to spread awareness about Patel’s contribution to Indian history.
Importance of National Unity Day
India’s Ministry of Home Affairs said in an official announcement for National Unity Day, that National Unity Day is “an opportunity to reconnect the inherent strength and resilience of our country, to face real and potential threats to unity and integrity, and to our country’s Will provide protection.”
Statue of Unity ( Statue Of Unity )
On the 143rd anniversary of Patel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Statue of Unity at Gujarat. It’s the tallest statue in the world using a height of 182 meters (597 ft). It is located in front of the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River in Kevadia Colony.
Pledge of national unity day
From the year 2019, PM Modi administered the oath of National Unity Day on the Statue of Unity. The pledge is: “I fully pledge that I dedicate myself to upholding the unity, integrity and security of the nation and work hard to spread this message among my fellow countrymen. I pledge this Take from the spirit of unity of our country, which was made possible by the vision and actions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. I also am determined to contribute to ensure the internal security of our country.”
